Cell Phone Cancer Risk: What the Evidence Shows

Few gadgets sit closer to our heads for more hours a day than the mobile phone — so the question keeps coming back: could it be raising our cancer risk?

Examining the evidence on mobile phone radiation and cancer risk

The mobile phone has gone from a simple way to make a call to a device most of us barely put down — for messaging, email, browsing, banking, gaming and staying connected. And as our screen time has climbed, so has a persistent worry: is there a real cell phone cancer risk, or not?

There is no tidy answer. For every study that flags a possible hazard, another finds the evidence inconclusive and calls for more research. That mixed picture is exactly why the question is so hard to settle — and why it pays to understand what the research actually says rather than the headlines.

How could a phone cause cancer in the first place?

Mobile phones transmit radiofrequency (RF) energy — radio waves, which are a form of non-ionizing radiation. Because we tend to hold the phone against the ear, the tissues nearest the antenna — in the head, brain and neck — absorb some of that energy.

This matters because the RF from phones is different in kind from the radiation we already know causes cancer. X-rays and nuclear radiation are ionizing — energetic enough to strip electrons from atoms and damage DNA directly. Mobile phone radiation, along with the radiation from radar and microwave ovens, is non-ionizing and far weaker. To date there is no firm evidence that non-ionizing RF energy damages cells the way ionizing radiation does — which is a large part of why the science remains unsettled.

A second driver of concern is simply scale. The number of mobile users worldwide has climbed past five billion, so even a very small individual risk, spread across billions of people, is something health bodies take seriously enough to keep studying.

What do the studies say?

In 2011 the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organization, convened a working group of more than thirty scientists to review the existing research. On the strength of that review, IARC placed RF electromagnetic fields — including those from mobile phones — in Group 2B: "possibly carcinogenic to humans".

Following its 2011 review, IARC classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields, including those from mobile phones, as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" (Group 2B) (IARC Monographs Vol. 102, 2013).

It is important to read that classification carefully. "Possibly carcinogenic" signals that a link cannot be ruled out and deserves further study — not that one has been proven. The American Cancer Society, for its part, has noted that the IARC findings do not amount to strong evidence and that more investigation is needed. At the same time it suggests that people who are concerned can reasonably limit their exposure — using a headset or the speakerphone and cutting down overall use — and that reducing use among children is especially sensible given the uncertainty.

Cancer takes years to show up

Here is a crucial catch. Cancer can take years — sometimes decades — to develop. Widespread mobile phone use only really took off in the last couple of decades, so most population studies so far have only been able to capture short-term effects. The long game is still being played out.

That has not stopped researchers digging. Some findings have kept the question very much alive:

  • A major, government-backed study by the US National Toxicology Program found that rats exposed to mobile phone RF radiation were more likely to develop certain tumours — specifically malignant gliomas in the brain and schwannomas in the heart. (A schwannoma is not a cancer but a tumour of the nerve sheath; it can still cause considerable pain and damage.) The increases were small in absolute terms, but because these are rare tumours the signal was still considered noteworthy — and all the more so because similar tumour types have been reported in humans.

The US National Toxicology Program's two-year animal study reported increased incidences of glioma in the brain and malignant schwannoma in the heart of exposed male rats (Hardell & Carlberg, 2019).

  • Work by the Swedish oncologist Lennart Hardell reported that people who had used wireless phones for twenty to twenty-five years were close to twice as likely to develop glioma — a type of brain cancer that is often fatal — with the odds rising alongside more years and more hours of use.

A pooled analysis of Swedish case-control studies found an increased risk of glioma associated with long-term mobile and cordless phone use, with risk rising with duration and cumulative hours of use (Hardell & Carlberg, 2015).

That same body of work pointed to the highest glioma risk among people who began using mobile phones before the age of twenty — a finding with obvious implications, given how early children and teenagers now pick up their first phone.

Why the risk may be greater for children

Children and teenagers are thought to be more vulnerable to mobile phone radiation, and for several reasons. Their heads are smaller, their skulls thinner and their brain tissue more conductive, so a given exposure may reach deeper. Their nervous systems are still developing. And because they start young, they are on track to accumulate far more years of exposure across a lifetime than earlier generations did.

The honest position is that data specific to children remain limited and the long-term effects are still being investigated. But in light of the findings so far, many researchers argue that guidance on children's phone use should err on the side of caution now rather than wait decades for certainty. Given how little it costs to be careful, why take the risk?

11 practical ways to reduce your exposure

You can't unplug from modern life, but you can cut your exposure with a few simple habits:

  1. Limit mobile calls; use a landline when you can.
  2. Keep calls short and text instead where possible — but never text while driving or walking.
  3. When talking or texting, hold the phone away from your body. Use the speakerphone or a wired headset rather than a Bluetooth earpiece, which also emits radiation.
  4. Don't sleep with your phone under your pillow.
  5. If you use your phone as an alarm, switch to a bedside clock — or put the phone in airplane mode overnight.
  6. Avoid using your phone where the signal is weak, such as in a lift or a moving vehicle; phones emit the most radiation while hunting for a tower.
  7. Let children use a mobile only when genuinely necessary.
  8. Don't carry your phone in a trouser or shirt pocket against the body.
  9. Wait until a call connects before putting the phone to your ear.
  10. For long calls, prefer a landline; if you must use a mobile, switch sides now and then to spread the exposure.
  11. Choose a phone with a low SAR (Specific Absorption Rate), the measure of how much RF energy the body absorbs during use.

Does phone radiation cause cancer?

The honest answer is that it has not been proven either way. Mobile phones emit non-ionizing radiation, which is far weaker than the ionizing radiation known to cause cancer, and large reviews have reached mixed conclusions. IARC classifies it as "possibly carcinogenic", meaning a link cannot be excluded and more research is needed — not that a link is established.

What does IARC's "Group 2B" classification actually mean?

Group 2B is used when there is limited evidence in humans and less than sufficient evidence in animals — enough to warrant concern and further study, but not enough to confirm a hazard. Coffee and pickled vegetables have sat in the same category, which gives a sense of how cautious rather than alarming the label is.

Is mobile phone radiation more dangerous for children?

Possibly. Children have thinner skulls and more conductive brain tissue, their nervous systems are still developing, and they will accumulate far more years of exposure over a lifetime. The data specific to children are limited, which is precisely why many researchers recommend a precautionary approach to how much children use phones.

How can I lower my cell phone cancer risk without giving up my phone?

Small habits add up: use a wired headset or speakerphone, keep the phone away from your body, favour texting over long calls, avoid use in low-signal areas, don't sleep with it by your head, and choose a low-SAR handset. None of this requires giving up your phone — just using it a little more thoughtfully.
