Where the real leverage is
Most people who take curcumin for inflammation are hoping to influence the chronic, low-grade kind described at the top of this article. If that is the goal, it is only fair to point out that the things with the largest effect on it are the ones nobody sells: regular movement, enough sleep, not smoking, moderating alcohol, and a diet with plenty of plants, fibre and oily fish in it. Body composition matters too, since fat tissue is metabolically active and contributes to inflammatory signalling.
That is not an argument against curcumin. It is an argument for the right order of operations. A supportive nutrient works best on top of those foundations, not instead of them, and anyone hoping a capsule will offset the rest is likely to be disappointed. It is also worth remembering that turmeric has been part of everyday cooking for centuries, and using it generously in food is a perfectly reasonable way to include it.
Who should check before taking it
Culinary amounts of turmeric are food, and treated as such. Concentrated curcumin supplements are a different proposition, and a few groups should take advice before starting. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist first if you take anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication, if you have gallstones or any obstruction of the bile duct, if you have surgery coming up, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
