If you're considering resveratrol, the practical questions matter most: where to find it, how much, and what to watch for. Below we look at the resveratrol foods worth knowing, at what the research has actually used, and at the cautions that come with a supplement rather than a meal.
A quick refresher
Resveratrol is a natural polyphenol — a plant compound with antioxidant properties — that's been studied for a range of potential benefits, which we cover in the health benefits of resveratrol. Here, the focus is the practical side: food sources, how much people take, and safety.
Resveratrol foods and where they come from
The most famous source is red wine, which is where much of resveratrol's fame began — but the amounts in wine are small, and it's certainly not a reason to drink more. Better food sources include red and purple grapes (especially the skins), peanuts, pistachios, blueberries, bilberries, cranberries and dark chocolate. Eating these gives you resveratrol alongside a whole package of other beneficial plant compounds, which is a genuinely worthwhile approach.
It helps to know why those particular foods appear on the list. Plants make resveratrol as part of their own defence system, producing more of it under stress from fungal attack, injury or ultraviolet light. That defensive role explains why it concentrates in the parts most exposed to the outside world — skins, seed coats and the papery covering of a peanut — rather than in the soft flesh inside, and why the amount in any given bunch of grapes is so variable: variety, climate and ripeness all shift it.
Processing matters for the same reason. Red wine carries more than white largely because it is fermented with the grape skins, where the compound sits. Juicing or peeling removes much of it; eating the whole fruit keeps it. None of this is a reason to chase a target amount from food. The practical version is simpler: eat grapes, berries and nuts regularly, and treat resveratrol as one useful passenger among the many polyphenols they carry rather than the reason to eat them.
A review of human studies noted that dietary resveratrol intake is relatively low and that its bioavailability is limited, since it is rapidly metabolised after absorption (Ramírez-Garzaírez-Garza et al., 2018).
Resveratrol dosage: what the studies have used
Because food amounts are modest, research on resveratrol's effects has typically used concentrated supplements, and the amounts studied vary widely from study to study. There isn't a single officially established dose, and more is not automatically better. This is precisely the kind of thing worth discussing with a healthcare professional rather than self-prescribing a high dose — especially since the way resveratrol is absorbed means simply taking more doesn't straightforwardly translate into more benefit.
That variation between trials is the honest reason no number is quoted here as a recommendation. Studies have used different amounts, different formulations and different lengths of time, in different groups of people, and they have not all pointed the same way. A figure from one trial of one preparation is not a general instruction. What can fairly be said is that the research amounts are far above anything a normal diet supplies, that they were used under study conditions, and that the field has not converged on an optimal one.
The same caution applies to the label on a bottle. A stated amount tells you what the manufacturer has put in a capsule; it is not a clinical recommendation. If you are weighing up a supplement, the useful questions are what form it contains, whether the amount is stated per capsule rather than only per serving of several capsules, and what your doctor or pharmacist makes of it alongside anything else you take.
Why absorption complicates the dosage question
Resveratrol is unusually awkward in the body. It is absorbed reasonably well from the gut, but then modified so quickly by the gut wall and the liver that very little of the unchanged compound circulates in the blood. Most of what reaches the bloodstream arrives as metabolites — chemically altered versions — and how much biological activity those retain is still being worked out. This is the gap behind many disappointing human results: a compound can be dramatically active in a dish of cells and still struggle to reach the same concentrations in a person.
It also explains why taking a very large amount is not a straightforward solution: beyond a point the body's processing capacity, not the size of the dose, is the limiting factor, and the main thing extra tends to buy is a greater chance of digestive complaints. Formulations designed to improve absorption exist, and most research uses the trans-resveratrol form, but whether any particular one translates into a better outcome for a reader is not something the current evidence answers.
Resveratrol side effects and cautions
Resveratrol is generally well tolerated at typical amounts, but a few honest cautions are worth knowing. Higher supplemental doses have been associated with digestive upset in some people. More importantly, resveratrol may have a mild blood-thinning effect and can interact with medications — particularly blood thinners (such as warfarin), and potentially others processed by the same liver pathways.
A clinical review of resveratrol reported that it is generally well tolerated in trials, with gastrointestinal effects at higher doses, while emphasising that its clinical benefits and optimal dosing in humans remain to be firmly established (resveratrol clinical review, 2024).
It is worth being clear about what "generally well tolerated" means and does not mean. It means that in the trials conducted so far, most participants took resveratrol without notable problems, and that the effects reported were mostly gastrointestinal — nausea, loose stools, abdominal discomfort — and mostly at the higher end of the amounts used. It does not mean that a supplement is inert, that it suits everybody, or that years of daily use at high intakes have been shown to be safe. Trials have generally been short, and long-term data are thin.
The interaction question deserves more weight than the side-effect question, because it is the one most likely to matter. A mild blood-thinning effect is unimportant on its own and potentially significant on top of medication that already thins the blood, or alongside other supplements with similar effects. The same logic applies before any planned surgery or dental procedure. Telling whoever is treating you what you take is more useful than trying to judge the risk yourself.
Who should take extra care
Most people eating grapes, berries and nuts have nothing to think about. The care applies to supplements, and particularly to a few groups. Anyone taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication, or living with a bleeding disorder, should clear resveratrol with a clinician first, as should anyone with surgery scheduled. People taking several prescription medicines have more scope for the liver-pathway interactions mentioned above, and are best advised by a pharmacist who can see the whole list. In pregnancy and breastfeeding the sensible default for a concentrated supplement is to leave it alone unless a clinician says otherwise, simply because the safety data do not exist. And on the food side, peanuts are a common allergen, so an allergy trumps any interest in their polyphenol content.
What this does not settle
Being clear about the limits is part of using resveratrol sensibly, and two gaps are worth naming beyond the dosage and absorption questions already dealt with above. The first is comparative: there is no body of work showing that a supplement does more for a person than simply eating the foods the compound comes in, because that is a comparison researchers have rarely set out to make. The second is a question of attribution. Grapes, berries, nuts and cocoa carry dozens of polyphenols, so where something good is observed in people who eat plenty of them, singling out one molecule as the reason is an assumption rather than a finding — and resveratrol has had more attention than its neighbours largely because of the red wine story it arrived attached to. That is not a reason to dismiss it; it is a reason to hold it lightly, keep the foods, and treat any supplement decision as one to make with a professional who knows your history.
The sensible bottom line: enjoy resveratrol-rich foods freely, and if you're considering a supplement — especially if you take any medication or are pregnant or breastfeeding — talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
