If you smoke — or live with someone who does — your body is quietly burning through one of its most important vitamins faster than most people ever realise.

How smoking depletes vitamin C and why it matters

Most of us reach for vitamin C to prop up the immune system. But if you smoke, you almost certainly need more of it than the average person — because smoking actively drains your reserves at the same time as it raises the demand.

Tobacco smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals, and over 50 of them are recognised carcinogens. Smoking saps the body of vitamin C

Here's a figure that surprises people: a single cigarette is often said to cost the body around 25 mg of vitamin C. Smoking drains vitamin C levels and burns through the vitamin far faster than in non-smokers — in laboratory work, plasma vitamin C has been shown to be all but wiped out after just a few puffs of cigarette smoke.

The mechanism is oxidative stress. Nicotine and the other toxins in smoke flood the body with free radicals that damage cells and drive inflammation, feeding the progression of chronic, degenerative disease. The body spends its available vitamin C mopping up that oxidative load — so a smoker faces a double setback: more damage and a faster turnover of the very antioxidants needed to counter it. That combination is the essence of smokers vitamin C deficiency, and it is why the topic of vitamin C and smoking deserves more attention than it usually gets.

In a controlled study of male smokers and non-smokers with matched diets, ascorbic acid (vitamin C) was significantly depleted by smoking and efficiently restored by moderate supplementation (Lykkesfeldt et al., 2000).

None of this is a substitute for stopping — quitting remains the single best thing any smoker can do. But while the habit persists, keeping vitamin C topped up addresses several of the specific ways smoking harms the body.

1. Protection against oxidative damage

Fragile molecules — the fats, lipoproteins and DNA inside us — are more prone to oxidation in smokers, and oxidised lipids are an early step on the road to clogged arteries. Smokers carry higher levels of F2-isoprostanes, markers of free-radical-driven lipid damage and a recognised risk indicator for heart disease. As a front-line antioxidant, vitamin C helps blunt the impact of tobacco toxins and shields plasma lipids and DNA from the kind of damage that can set the stage for disease.

2. Better blood-vessel function

Smoking impairs the endothelium — the delicate inner lining of the blood vessels — and pushes forward atherosclerosis and high blood pressure. Part of the problem is that oxidative stress reduces the availability of nitric oxide, the molecule that lets vessels relax. Vitamin C helps restore that function, partly by neutralising free radicals and supporting nitric oxide, and it has been shown to improve blood-vessel relaxation in smokers.

Vitamin C markedly improved endothelium-dependent responses in chronic smokers, supporting the idea that their vascular dysfunction is driven in part by oxygen-derived free radicals (Heitzer, Just & Münzel, 1996).

3. Reducing the effects of smoking in pregnancy

Smoking in pregnancy — active or passive — is linked to premature birth, low birth weight and miscarriage, and it interferes with the developing baby's lungs, with lifelong effects on breathing and a higher risk of asthma. While quitting is by far the best course, there is encouraging evidence that vitamin C can soften some of the damage.

In a randomised trial, daily vitamin C taken by pregnant smokers improved their newborns' lung-function results and reduced wheezing through the first year of life (McEvoy et al., 2014).

4. Recycling vitamin E

Vitamin C doesn't work alone. As well as being a powerful antioxidant in its own right, it helps regenerate vitamin E — another key antioxidant — returning it to active service. Vitamin E in turn calms inflammation and supports immunity, both of which take a hit in smokers. The two vitamins are very much a team.

5. Calming inflammation

Smoking raises C-reactive protein (CRP), an inflammatory marker that flags higher cardiovascular risk. Vitamin C has been reported to help bring elevated CRP levels down, one more way it counters the low-grade inflammation that smoking stokes.

6. Supporting recovery and immunity

Vitamin C levels fall further after any injury, trauma or surgery, as the body's demand climbs — and for smokers, whose reserves are already stretched, the shortfall is sharper.
