What is Turmeric?
Turmeric is a well-known spice that comes from the plant Curcuma longa. It is native to India and other countries in Southeast Asia. In India, the root of turmeric has been used for centuries, both as a spice that adds flavour and colour to the food as well as a therapeutic herb used in digestive problems, skin disorders, cold, upper respiratory tract infections, liver disorders, wound healing and arthritis.
In Ayurveda, the root of the turmeric plant is highly revered for its powerful medicinal and healing properties. Also known as the golden spice, turmeric is loaded with many bioactive compounds known as curcuminoids that are responsible for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. Curcumin is possibly the most researched bioactive compound present in turmeric root and many high-quality studies suggest that curcumin is one of the most effective natural substances that can reduce pain and inflammation in the body, without any adverse effects. In fact, some studies have suggested that turmeric could be as effective as commonly used prescription drugs in some health conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, type 2 diabetes.

1. Reduces inflammation
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and opioids are mainstay medications to treat pain and inflammation, particularly in conditions such as arthritis, migraine, backpain and inflammatory bowel syndrome. Prolonged use of these medications can cause nausea, upset stomach, stomach ulcers and increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. Using them over long-term can increase risk of heart disease and cause damage to liver and kidneys.
Studies suggest curcumin can block the synthesis of molecules (such as NF-κB, cytokines and prostaglandins) that cause pain and inflammation. Research shows that curcumin may be more effective than traditional and commonly used anti-inflammatory medications.
A number of human clinical trials have suggested that curcumin’s anti-inflammatory properties can be used to manage various conditions where chronic inflammation is the main culprit. These conditions include atherosclerosis, obesity, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, endothelial dysfunction, and even dementia.

Curcumin reduces joint inflammation and eases painful symptoms in OA, due to its anti-inflammatory effects.  In fact, it has been found to be as effective as ibuprofen in reducing pain and improving joint function in people with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. 
Curcumin also helps in reducing the symptoms in rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune condition where chronic inflammation damages and destroys cartilage and the surrounding tissue. This causes painful joints with swelling, stiffness and reduced mobility. Chronic inflammation of the joint also causes joint injury and deformity.
Studies show that curcumin can be safely used to manage symptoms in people with active rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In fact, it has been found to be more effective than diclofenac in reducing swelling and tenderness in the joints in RA, but with fewer side effects.

Studies have revealed a number of mechanisms how curcumin may help people with diabetes.  For example, curcumin protects beta cells of the pancreas from oxidative damage. Beta cells are responsible for secreting insulin, a hormone that manages blood sugar levels. It also improves cholesterol levels and boosts the antioxidant status in people with type 2 diabetes. Why black pepper is added to our curcumin product?
While curcumin is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound, it not readily absorbed by the body owing to its poor bio-availability. Black pepper is known to improve the absorption and bio-availability of curcumin many times over. If you are looking to achieve the maximum benefits of curcumin that it is known for, it is best to consume curcumin with black pepper.
