The same golden spice that colours a curry has, it turns out, been studied for keeping your heart and blood vessels healthy.
Why curcumin and the heart?
Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, is best known as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory — and those two properties are exactly what makes it interesting for cardiovascular health. Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress are central drivers of heart disease, quietly damaging blood vessels over time. A compound that calms both, as we explore in curcumin and inflammation, is a natural candidate for supporting heart health.
What the research shows
The most encouraging cardiovascular findings centre on the endothelium — the delicate inner lining of your blood vessels, whose healthy function is essential for normal blood flow and pressure.
A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials found that curcumin/turmeric supplementation improved endothelial function (flow-mediated dilation) and modestly reduced blood pressure (Dehzad et al., 2024).
That measure is worth understanding, because it carries a lot of weight in this field. The endothelium is a single layer of cells lining every blood vessel, and one of its jobs is to release nitric oxide, the signal that tells the surrounding muscle to relax so the vessel widens. When blood flow rises, a healthy vessel dilates in response; flow-mediated dilation is that response, measured. Vessels that respond sluggishly are described as having impaired endothelial function, which tends to appear early, long before anything is felt as a symptom, and which is sensitive to inflammation and oxidative stress. That sensitivity is exactly why a compound with curcumin's properties was tested here in the first place.
Cholesterol and beyond
Curcumin has also been studied for its effects on blood lipids, another key cardiovascular factor.
A meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials in people with cardiovascular risk factors found that turmeric and curcumin could help improve blood lipid levels, though the authors noted the studies were of limited size (Qin et al., 2017).
Taken together, curcumin's cardiovascular research is genuinely promising — touching endothelial function, blood pressure, cholesterol and the underlying inflammation that links them. It's fair to call it supportive rather than a treatment, and it partners naturally with the other heart-friendly habits and nutrients, such as the vitamin K2 story in vitamin K2 and heart health.
Turmeric for heart health: what the trials can and cannot tell us
The word "improved" in a trial summary always deserves a second look. What these studies measured were markers — how well a vessel dilates, a blood pressure reading, a cholesterol or triglyceride level — and not whether anyone went on to have fewer heart attacks or strokes. Markers are the reasonable place for early research to start, and they matter, but a change in a measurement is a step towards an outcome rather than the outcome itself.
The shape of the evidence sets limits too. As the lipid meta-analysis notes, the individual trials were small, and across this field they have also tended to be short, to enrol people who already had cardiovascular risk factors rather than the general population, and to use a variety of different preparations. That mix is why results are described as promising rather than settled: pooling small studies of different products in selected groups can show a consistent direction without establishing how large the effect is, who it applies to, or how long it lasts.
The absorption catch
Any practical discussion of curcumin runs into the same obstacle. Curcumin makes up only a modest fraction of turmeric root, and what is swallowed is poorly absorbed and quickly processed and cleared, so ordinary culinary use delivers very little into the bloodstream. Most curcumin heart health trials therefore use concentrated extracts, often formulated to improve absorption, rather than the spice itself. This matters when reading any headline about turmeric: a result obtained with a specially prepared extract does not transfer automatically to a spoonful in a curry, and it does not transfer automatically between different formulations either. Cooking with turmeric is a good habit for other reasons; it is not the same intervention as the one being tested.

Who should take extra care
Turmeric as a spice suits almost everyone. Concentrated supplements need more thought. Curcumin can interact with blood thinners, so anyone on anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication should ask a clinician first, and the same applies before planned surgery. Turmeric stimulates the gallbladder, so anyone with gallstones or bile duct problems is usually advised to avoid supplemental amounts. Some people find higher amounts cause stomach upset or reflux. And because heart medication is precisely the sort of treatment people are tempted to supplement around, it is worth saying plainly that anyone taking blood pressure, cholesterol or diabetes medicines should tell their doctor before adding curcumin rather than after.
What this does not mean
The curcumin cardiovascular benefits reported so far are group averages, which is an easy thing to lose sight of when reading a summary. Within any of those groups some people will have shifted a good deal and others barely at all, and nothing on a label tells you in advance which of the two you would turn out to be. Take the findings as the direction the research currently points in rather than as a prediction for one person. They are not evidence that curcumin prevents heart disease, and nothing here should be read as a reason to change or stop prescribed medication. The habits with the strongest evidence behind them remain unglamorous and well known: not smoking, regular movement, a largely plant-based diet, sleep, weight and blood pressure kept in reasonable order, and the treatment your doctor has prescribed taken as directed. Curcumin sits alongside those as a supportive extra for people who want one, and it is worth being clear that this is the modest role the evidence currently supports.
