Long before “adaptogen” became a wellness buzzword, one glossy red mushroom was quietly prized across Asia for helping the body find its balance — this is the honest story of reishi.

Walk into any health-food shop today and you will find “adaptogens” on labels everywhere — powders, teas, coffee blends, gummies. It sounds like a modern invention. It isn’t. The idea that certain plants and fungi might help the body cope with the wear and tear of daily life is centuries old, and few ingredients embody it better than reishi. Your doctor probably never mentioned it, yet in parts of Asia it has been valued for more than two thousand years. This is a plain-English introduction to what an adaptogen is, what reishi is, and — just as importantly — where the science honestly sits.

What is an adaptogen, really?

The word is younger than the plants it describes. It was coined by Soviet scientists in the mid-twentieth century for substances that seemed to help the body resist a wide range of stressors — physical, chemical and biological — while nudging it back towards balance rather than pushing it in one direction.

In the research literature, adaptogens are described as herbal preparations that may increase tolerance to mental exhaustion and support the body during periods of stress, with their proposed effects linked to the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis — the system that governs our stress response. Two things are worth being clear about. First, “adaptogen” is a scientific and traditional concept, not an official health category in the European Union — so it describes an idea and a history of use, not a guaranteed effect. Second, the research is genuinely interesting but still developing. With that framing in place, reishi is a wonderful place to start, because it sits right at the crossroads of ancient tradition and modern curiosity.

What is reishi? (Ganoderma lucidum)

Reishi is the Japanese name for the mushroom Ganoderma lucidum — known in China as lingzhi and in Japan also as mannentake, the “ten-thousand-year mushroom.” Unusually among cultivated mushrooms, it has always been valued for its tonic qualities rather than as food: it is woody and bitter, not something you would fry with garlic.

In traditional Chinese medicine the name lingzhi carries connotations of spiritual potency and longevity, and the mushroom has a long documented history of use for promoting general wellbeing across China, Japan and other parts of Asia. (Wachtel-Galor et al., 2011)

Modern analysis has catalogued more than four hundred natural compounds in reishi, but two families do most of the work that researchers focus on: the triterpenes (including the bitter-tasting ganoderic acids) and the polysaccharides. These are the constituents scientists tend to study when they ask what reishi might be doing — though it is only fair to say that much of that work is still preclinical.

Why spore powder?

In the regions where it grows, jiaogulan earned the affectionate name “the immortality herb” — a nod to the longevity of the people who drank it, not a promise the plant can deliver. Like reishi, it is traditionally taken not for a single dramatic effect but as part of a steady, everyday routine. Much of the modern interest in jiaogulan benefits centres on its traditional reputation as a gently energising daily tonic — the same reputation behind the popular idea of adaptogens for energy: a plant said to lift you when you are flagging and settle you when you are wired.

So what is the common thread? The prevailing idea in the research is that adaptogens interact with the body’s central stress-management system — the HPA axis — helping to buffer the ups and downs rather than acting as a stimulant or a sedative. It is the thinking behind the popular interest in adaptogens for stress — a plant that helps the body meet everyday pressure more evenly.

Most of what is known about reishi and jiaogulan comes from traditional use and from laboratory and animal studies; robust human trials are still relatively few. That is why you will not see us claim that reishi treats any condition, “boosts” your immune system, or relieves anxiety — those would be claims which the rules rightly do not allow. What we can say is that these are two of the most storied tonic botanicals in the world, with a long tradition of everyday use and a growing body of research that keeps them genuinely interesting.

How people take reishi and jiaogulan

In practice, both are usually taken as part of a daily routine rather than now and then. Reishi comes as a tea, a tincture or — most conveniently — as capsules, which sidestep the bitterness entirely. Jiaogulan is most often drunk as a mild tea, and also comes in capsule form. As with any supplement, consistency matters more than intensity: traditional use is measured in weeks and months, not days. And a sensible caveat — if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or take prescription medication (reishi in particular can interact with blood-thinning medicines), check with your doctor before starting.
