Ask anyone to name an antioxidant and vitamin C comes first — yet much of its value lies in the company it keeps.

The antioxidant everyone knows — and the partner it works with

Vitamin C is the one antioxidant almost everyone can name. It is genuinely essential: humans can't make it, so we have to get it from food or a supplement, and it takes part in a surprisingly long list of everyday jobs. Last time we looked at glutathione — the "master antioxidant" your cells make inside themselves — and promised to come back to a partnership that is easy to miss. This is that article.

Here's the idea in one line: vitamin C and glutathione don't just work in parallel, they work as a team, each helping to return the other to its active form. Vitamin C is a water-soluble antioxidant and an electron donor that acts as a cofactor for a family of enzymes throughout the body (Padayatty & Levine, 2016); a recent scoping review reaffirms its multiple roles as an antioxidant in plasma and body fluids and as a cofactor across collagen and other pathways (Lykkesfeldt & Carr, 2023).

What vitamin C actually does

Before the partnership, it's worth being clear about vitamin C's own recognised roles — because they're broader than the "for colds" reputation suggests. As a nutrient, vitamin C is recognised to contribute to normal collagen formation for the skin, to the normal function of the immune system, and to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. It increases the absorption of iron from food, contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and helps return vitamin E to its active form — a first hint of the recycling theme we're about to explore.

Vitamin C supports numerous cellular functions of the immune system (Carr & Maggini, 2017), and normal skin holds high concentrations of it, where it is involved in collagen synthesis and antioxidant protection (Pullar, Carr & Vissers, 2017).

The partnership: vitamin C and glutathione

Part of what makes the pairing work is that the two antioxidants aren't crowded into the same space. Vitamin C is the front-line antioxidant in the watery compartments of the body — plasma and the fluids between cells — while glutathione does most of its work inside the cell. Different locations, one connected network.

Antioxidants work by giving away electrons to neutralise reactive molecules — but that leaves the antioxidant itself "spent" and needing to be recharged. This is where the network matters more than any single molecule. Vitamin C and glutathione hand electrons back and forth: glutathione helps regenerate vitamin C from its spent form, and vitamin C helps spare and regenerate glutathione. Neither has to be thrown away after one use — the pair keeps recharging each other.

This isn't only theory. In a controlled human study, a modest daily dose of vitamin C raised the amount of active glutathione inside red blood cells — evidence that topping up one antioxidant can lift the other. It's the clearest reason to think of them together rather than separately, and it's the honest logic behind pairing the two in a single formula.

Daily vitamin C (500 mg) raised reduced glutathione in the blood of healthy adults by close to half (Johnston, Meyer & Srilakshmi, 1993), consistent with the long-recognised way ascorbate and glutathione spare and regenerate one another (Meister, 1992); a 2023 review describes the two as deeply interconnected and mutually essential to each other (Lee et al., 2023).

Why we pair them — and a note on liposomal delivery

None of this displaces the basics. A varied diet supplies vitamin C readily — it's found in citrus, peppers, broccoli, kiwi and berries — and because the vitamin is water-soluble and not stored in large amounts, a steady daily intake matters more than an occasional large one.
