Medicinal Mushrooms: How Fungi Support Your Immune System

The oldest large organisms on land, fungi have spent millions of years perfecting their chemistry — and a handful of mushrooms turn out to be some of the most sophisticated immune-support foods we know of. This guide covers what actually makes a mushroom medicinal, the medicinal mushrooms benefits the research supports, and the main species worth knowing about.
Ancient fungi, modern science
Medicinal mushrooms have been used across many cultures for thousands of years, with practitioners of Eastern medicine harnessing them for millennia while the West has only recently caught up. Of the world's fungi, only a small fraction have been documented, and a subset of those carry genuine medicinal properties. Unlike a passing wellness trend, their reputation is now backed by a growing body of research into what these fungi actually do — especially for the immune system.
What's striking is that mushrooms sit in their own kingdom of life, biologically closer to animals than to plants — part of why their chemistry is so distinctive, and why the compounds they make interact with our bodies in ways ordinary vegetables don't. What makes a mushroom "medicinal"? Beta-glucans
The stars of the show are polysaccharides — long chains of sugar molecules — and in particular the beta-glucans that make up much of the mushroom cell wall. What matters is that these fungal beta-glucans (specifically the branched 1,3/1,6 forms) aren't made by the human body, so your immune system recognises them as "non-self" and responds. They bind to receptors such as Dectin-1 on immune cells, largely in the gut-associated lymphoid tissue, switching on a cascade of immune activity.
Not all beta-glucans are equal, either: their immune potency depends on structure, branching and molecular weight, which is why different mushroom species — and different extraction methods — can vary quite a bit in effect. It's a reminder that with medicinal mushrooms, quality and preparation matter as much as the species on the label.

Mushrooms for immunity: how the immune effect works
You will often see them marketed as immune boosting mushrooms, but the key word is modulation, not "boosting". Rather than flooring the accelerator on your immune system, mushroom compounds appear to help train and balance it — activating front-line cells like macrophages, natural killer cells and dendritic cells when needed, while helping keep the response proportionate. That's a more sophisticated (and safer) idea than simply revving immunity up, and it's why medicinal mushrooms are studied for resilience against infection rather than as a quick fix.
There's a gut dimension worth noting too. Because so much of the immune system lives in and around the gut, and because mushroom beta-glucans interact with immune tissue there — and can act as prebiotic fibres feeding beneficial bacteria — part of their immune effect is thought to run through the gut itself, tying mushrooms to the wider story of gut health and immunity.
A review of mushroom-derived bioactive molecules catalogued their antimicrobial, antiviral, hepatoprotective, antitumour and immunomodulatory properties, attributing much of this activity to beta-glucans and other polysaccharides in the cell wall (Patel et al., 2021).
Types of medicinal mushrooms: the key players
Different mushrooms bring different strengths:
- Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) — the "mushroom of immortality" in Chinese tradition, valued for immune support, calming the mind and supporting sleep and stress resilience.
- Lion's Mane — the "smart mushroom", best known for the brain and nerves rather than immunity; we cover it in depth in its own article.
- Cordyceps — traditionally used for energy, stamina and endurance.
- Chaga — prized for its exceptionally high antioxidant content.
- Turkey Tail — one of the most researched for immune support, and the source of the compound PSK used alongside conventional care in some countries.
- Shiitake & Maitake — culinary favourites that also supply immune-active beta-glucans, with maitake additionally studied for blood-sugar balance.
A study of a formulation combining reishi, shiitake and maitake found the blend produced synergistic immune-modulating activity in human macrophages — greater than the individual mushrooms alone — consistent with the idea that different fungal beta-glucans complement one another (reishi/shiitake/maitake macrophage study).
A closer look at reishi
Of all the medicinal mushrooms, reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is perhaps the most revered — known in Chinese tradition as lingzhi, the "mushroom of immortality", and historically reserved for royalty. Beyond its immune-supporting beta-glucans, reishi contains triterpenes thought to give it a calming, adaptogenic quality; it's traditionally used to ease stress, support restful sleep and build long-term resilience rather than to deliver a quick lift. That combination — steady immune support alongside a settling effect on the nervous system — is much of why reishi has stayed central to herbal traditions for over two thousand years, and why it's the mushroom many people reach for first.
Whole food or supplement?
Culinary mushrooms like shiitake and maitake are a delicious way to get some benefit, but many medicinal species (reishi, chaga, turkey tail) are too tough or bitter to eat and are taken as extracts. Because the active beta-glucans are locked inside tough fungal cell walls, they need to be released — which is why quality supplements use a hot-water extraction (and sometimes a dual water-and-alcohol extract to capture other compounds too). When choosing a product, it's worth checking whether it's made from the fruiting body or the mycelium, and whether beta-glucan content is actually stated.
