Giloy is a deciduous climbing shrub with yellow flowers and heart-shaped leaves. It grows throughout India and is also found in China, Sri Lanka, Australia and Africa. In India, giloy goes by many names that reflect its powerful medicinal and therapeutic effects on the body. For example, it is known as ‘Amrita’, which literally means ‘nectar of life’ or ‘root of immortality’. Another name of giloy is guduchi, which means one that protects the whole body. It is also known as giloe, which refers to the divine elixir that protects celestial beings from getting old. In a nutshell, giloy is a herb that is revered in Ayurveda for its ability to delay premature ageing and impart good health and longevity. T. cordifolia or giloy is a versatile herb and has been traditionally used for centuries in Ayurveda to treat various health conditions such as fever, infections, diabetes, diarrhea, digestive problems, skin problems, liver disorders and leprosy. While all parts of the plant have medical and therapeutic benefits, the stem is considered to possess extraordinary health benefits and is even approved for use in medicine by Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India. [1] The stem is exceptionally rich in nutritional content and bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, glycosides, steroids, terpenoids, ligans, and polysaccharides. These compounds are responsible for the plant’s anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunity-boosting, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-diabetic and antipyretic (that reduces fever) properties. Health Benefits in a Nutshell Anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory Boosts immunity Reduces fever naturally Beneficial in dengue fever, improves platelet count Anti-ageing Shows anti-allergic properties Helpful in allergic rhinitis Beneficial in asthma and respiratory infections Supports bone and joint health Regulates blood sugar levels Helpful in urinary tract infections Health Benefits 1. Anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory Giloy is very rich in flavonoids, polyphenols and other bioactive compounds that have excellent anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These antioxidant compounds help to fight free radicals, reduce oxidative stress, keep your cells and tissues healthy, and lower the risk of chronic degenerative diseases. In Ayurveda, giloy has been used to manage gouty arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis because of its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. 2. Boosts immunity and reduces allergy symptoms Giloy is an anti-inflammatory and an anti-pyretic herb that boosts immunity and improves the body's resistance against various kinds of infections. The herb has anti-allergic properties and it has been traditionally used for cough, cold and asthma. A study published in the Journal of Ethnobiology showed that giloy can be extremely useful in reducing the symptoms of allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever. [2] In this study, giloy provided almost complete relief in allergic symptoms such as sneezing, nasal discharge, nasal obstruction and nasal pruritus (itching and congestion). 3. Anti-pyretic properties In Ayurveda, Giloy is considered one of the best medicines to manage various fevers and provides faster recovery in people suffering from chronic fever. It has anti-pyretic properties, which means it has the ability to reduce fever. It has been found immensely useful in dengue fever as it reduces inflammation, reduces fever, boosts immunity and also increases platelet count. 4. Regulates blood sugar levels Giloy may be useful in managing diabetes and this activity can be attributed to the presence of alkaloids, tannins, glycosides, flavonoids and saponins. Preliminary research suggests that giloy encourages the production of insulin and improves insulin sensitivity in the cells. With its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, giloy may also help in managing diabetes associated complications such as wound healing [3], ulcers, retinopathy and kidney damage. A study in the International Journal of Research in Medical Sciences reported that Tinospora cordifolia works effectively as an add-on therapy in type-2 diabetes, without any adverse effect on the kidney and liver function tests. [4] 5. Reduces triglyceride levels Studies show that giloy may help reduce triglyceride levels [5-6]. Increased levels of triglycerides in the blood can increase the risk of heart disease, obesity, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. The stem of the giloy plant is a rich source of alkaloids (protoberberine), that help bring down triglyceride levels. Giloy also boosts the growth of healthy gut microbiota in patients with high cholesterol and triglyceride levels. [7] 6. Reduces stress and anxiety Giloy is an adaptogen, a rare class of herbs that helps the body adapt to stressors which can be emotional, physical, chemical and environmental. Giloy rejuvenates the body and increases its resistance to stress. Research shows that giloy can reduce stress, which helps in depression and in improving cognition and memory. [8] The study found that giloy increases norepinephrine (NE), serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain, the most likely mode of action behind its anti-depressant activity. 7. Removes toxins and helps in urinary infections Giloy works as a diuretic and helps the body to get rid of toxins, which makes it useful in detoxifying blood. In addition, its ability to fight bacteria and to boost immunity means it can be used to manage urinary tract infections. Giloy also supports kidney health as it reduces the levels of urea in the blood. Other Health Benefits Helps in digestion Reduces signs of ageing Helps in respiratory disorders Supports heart health Supports liver health Precautions Giloy or Tinospora cordifolia is considered safe to consume and is not associated with any toxicity or major side effects. Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or for women who are trying to conceive People who are taking medication for diabetes and or high blood pressure should consult their healthcare practitioner before taking giloy supplements in any form. People with pre-existing medical conditions, especially autoimmune disease like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or Crohn’s disease, should consult their healthcare practitioner before taking giloy supplements in any form. Shatavari is a plant found throughout India and its dried roots are used for its medicinal and therapeutic benefits. In ayurvedic system of medicine, it is considered as a general tonic for health, and particularly useful for female reproductive health. The root of shatavari has been traditionally used in inflammation, infectious diseases, gastric ulcers, and in improving women's health and boosting fertility in women. This rejuvenating herb is also known as "Queen of Herbs" and is mostly known for its nourishing role in female's health problems. Shatavari is an adaptogen, meaning it helps manage stress, supports adrenal glands, corrects hormonal imbalances and boosts immunity. One of the most important bioactive compounds present in the roots of shatavari are steroidal saponins (or Shatavarins). Health Benefits in a Nutshell Works as a tonic for women Improves reproductive health in women Maintains healthy hormonal balance Beneficial for menopausal women Helps in endometriosis Improves bone health Relieves PMS symptoms Regulates periods Helpful in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Reduces stress and anxiety Health Benefits 1. Improves reproductive health in women Shatavari is known as a female tonic that is very effective in supporting and nourishing the female reproductive system, from puberty to menopause. It has been traditionally used for centuries to maintain hormonal balance across all ages, improve the production of breast milk in lactating women, boost fertility and vitality in women, and reduce symptoms of PMS and menopause. Shatavari powder made from the roots has been found very effective in conditions such as endometriosis (where the tissue lining the uterus starts to grow outside the uterus, causing pain, irregular periods and fertility problems), osteoporosis and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and infertility. 2. Works as an antioxidant in the body The root of shatavari plant contains a number of antioxidant compounds, such as racemofuran, asparagine A, and racemose. It is believed that any kind of stress (psychological, physical and physiological) increases the production of free radicals, leading to oxidative damage and reproductive health disorders in women – including infertility, hormonal imbalances, poor quality of eggs and PCOS. Research suggests that one of the possible mechanisms through which shatavari may work in improving women’s reproductive health is by reducing oxidative stress and increasing antioxidant status of the body. [1] 3. Improves lactation Shatavari has galactagogue properties, meaning it can improve the production of breast milk in nursing women. Shatavari contains steroidal saponins and increases the production of the hormone prolactin, properties that are believed to boost breast milk production. 4. Helps in managing menopause symptoms Shatavari is an adaptogen that cools the body and supports hormonal balance in women, both during menstruation and menopause. The herb is rich in phytoestrogens, plant based bioactive compounds with oestrogen like properties. Small scale studies show that shatavari may help manage symptoms, such as hot flushes and night sweats in menopausal women. It supports bone health and may reduce the risk of osteoporosis, a well-known risk in post-menopausal women. Shatavari also moistens tissues, which helps reduce vaginal dryness in menopausal women. 5. Helpful in menstrual problems Shatavari is cooling and nourishing in nature and balances hormones. Shatavari supplements are known to be immensely beneficial in reducing the symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS), such as menstrual cramps. Known to improve strength, vitality and fertility in women, shatavari is also useful in irregular periods. It regulates the menstrual cycle, and reduces abnormal or heavy bleeding. It is also a good source of vitamins and minerals, that makes this plant useful in reducing fatigue and weakness in women. 6. Reducing symptoms of PCOS Shatavari is a very promising herb when it comes to managing Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and its symptoms such as irregular periods, abnormal blood flow, poor mood and hot flushes. Shatavari corrects hormonal imbalances, the root cause of PCOS. It is even used to prevent the production of new cysts. 7. Nourishes the digestive tract While shatavari is considered to be a nourishing and rejuvenating herb for women’s reproductive system, it also soothes the digestive tract. In Ayurveda, shatavari is used to heal gastric ulcers, and research suggests that it increases the secretion of mucus in the stomach and also reduces the levels of acids, reducing acidity in the stomach. Other health benefits May help in alcohol withdrawal Helps reduce anxiety May help reduce kidney stones May help manage type 2 diabetes Reduces hair loss Precautions Shatavari or A. racemosus is known to be completely safe for long-term use. Do not exceed recommended dosage and always consult your healthcare practitioner before you start taking shatavari in any form. Shatavari can cause allergic reactions, such as rash, itchy skin, itchy eyes and trouble breathing, in some people. Those who are allergic to asparagus should avoid taking shatavari supplements. Anyone taking diuretic medication should avoid taking shatavari supplements. People taking medications or herbal remedies to lower blood sugar should refrain from taking shatavari. Not recommended for those with oestrogen sensitivities. Not recommend for people with asthma and congestion. Shatavari supplements can cause weight gain. References: Pandey et al. Regular exercise, healthy diet and weight management certainly help and when it comes to supplements for joint health, some herbs can be very effective in providing pain relief, improving joint function and reducing age-related degeneration of the joint and surrounding tissues. Our "Joint Health Bundle" consists of Turmeric, Shallaki, Ashwagandha and Moringa, and is especially curated to address many aspects of bone and joint health, such as chronic pain, inflammation, mobility issues and joint dysfunction. All these herbs are well-known for their incredible healing and anti-inflammatory properties, and taking them together is a great way to keep your joints healthy and functional. For example, turmeric works really well with shallaki in reducing joint pain. The boswellic acids in shallaki work synergistically with the curcumin found in turmeric. In addition, we have added black pepper to our turmeric supplement to help your body to better absorb its amazing benefits. Our turmeric also contains ginger, which on its own is a powerful anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory herb and adds to the power of turmeric in reducing pain and inflammation. Turmeric (Curcuma Longa): Turmeric is one of the most effective herbs for joint health. Curcumin, the main bioactive compound in the spice turmeric, exhibits high anti-inflammatory properties and is known to ease pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. Did you know that curcumin is just as effective as ibuprofen in reducing pain and improving symptoms in people with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee? Studies show that the combination of curcumin and diclofenac (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug traditionally used to treat pain and inflammation in arthritis and other conditions), is significantly better at reducing pain in patients with OA as compared to diclofenac alone. (Read Here to know more about Turmeric health benefits). Shallaki (Boswellia Serrata): Shallaki reduces symptoms in people with osteoarthritis, where the breakdown of cartilage causes joint pain and stiffness. Boswellic acids, active compounds found in shallaki, are mainly responsible for the herb's ability to reduce pain, swelling and inflammation in the joints. These bioactive compounds block enzymes that promote inflammation and reduce breakdown of molecules that protect cartilage, prevent its degradation and keep it healthy. Additionally, shallaki helps in cartilage repair and even contributes towards the formation of new cartilage. (Read Here to know more about Shallaki health benefits). Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera): Ashwagandha is a popular Ayurvedic herb with amazing health benefits. This rejuvenating herb reduces stress, eases symptoms of anxiety, boosts immunity and helps you sleep better. People also take ashwagandha to improve their focus and as a general tonic to improve their overall health and well-being. Ashwagandha also supports bone and joint health and is effective in managing pain and other symptoms in people with arthritis. Ashwagandha contains a wide variety of bioactive compounds such as withanolides, flavonoids, alkaloids and saponins that show potent anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. It reduces oxidative damage, known to cause inflammation and tissue damage in inflammatory health conditions such as arthritis. It also improves bone mineral density, reduces pain and improves joint mobility. Ashwagandha is also an adaptogen that regulates your stress response and soothes the nervous system that helps in sleeping and regulating how you perceive pain. (Read Here to know more about Ashwagandha health benefits). Moringa (Moringa Oleifera): The leaves of the moringa tree are a rich source of many vitamins, minerals, protein and antioxidant compounds. Taking moringa supplements on a regular basis can help you meet your daily nutritional needs, boost immunity, keep your gut happy and maintain hormonal health. Moringa also keeps your bones healthy due to its rich calcium and phosphorus content. In addition, moringa leaves contain high amounts of flavonoids, polyphenols, saponins, isothiocyanates and vitamin C, anti-oxidant substances that help reduce oxidative damage and inflammation, and protect tissues, thus useful in inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. Also, as a rich source of protein, it helps in tissue repair. (Read Here to know more about Moringa health benefits). Unhealthy joints can make even simple, day-to-day activities difficult, affecting your overall quality of life. If you are looking for effective supplementation that works both proactively in preventing joint inflammation and damage, and also re-actively in response to the pain and inflammation caused by joint disorders such as arthritis, our "Joint Health Bundle" will help in several ways.
